Karen and I decided Berkeley and Arcata are in sync. They both compost, have lots of students and the street corners reek of pot. The sun was shining while we were there visiting John and his new home. The 80 degree weather was scorching to our 60-degree-lovin’-skin. You’d think Berkeley was full of hippies, but most of the people I saw there looked really clean and even preppy. I think it may have been because we were so close to UC Berkeley. We did a little exploring on Telegraph Street  - hippie shops and student cafes – then meandered over to the UC Berkeley campus. Joe Shreve was giddy when he discovered a fundraiser booth on the quad where you could pie a girl in the face. It cost him a dollar to keep a smile on his face for the next ten minutes. He said he felt like he had not lived before that experience.

We also saw a large building that said “The Daily Californian” on it. Apparently, the student newspaper also serves as the community’s daily newspaper. Impressive.

Next, our little vay-cay gang made it to the BART station to travel to San Francisco. I said “I feel like I’m in Europe!” when we were purchasing our tickets. I got a few looks like, “Wow, you’re a bumpkin.” I told Joe I don’t get out much. I realized I had not been in a large city since Briana and I traveled to England back in May. I was really excited to be in the fast-paced city culture. I had hot pink (Gaga) sunglasses on and felt ready to take on the world.

Once we started walking the busy streets of San Francisco, it lost a bit of its magic for me. It was stressful and expensive. Everything was a wait and personal space was nearly unheard of. A few hours later, we met up with some friends that knew the city a bit better than we did. We ended up going to a small bar called “The Knockout.” There were only like 15 people in the whole joint and we took turns singing karaoke. I sang at least five times with Karen and Francis as my co-singers (we signed up as “A-Bay and Crew”). The Eagles, No Doubt, Flaming Lips – I sang a variety with my girls. I tried to sing some Beyonce. Wow, she sings fast! I have a new appreciation for B as a performer. We even got Joe Clerici to sing karaoke for the first time! Karen and I took goofy photos in a photo booth and the bar gave us free pizza! The KJ said we made his night and bid us farewell as we left with big smiles on our faces.

We were off to sleep on John’s floor. We woke up the next morning and arrived home back in Humboldt this evening. I love seeing the Redwood trees as I drive back into Humboldt County. The temperature dropped and I put on a fleece. I love home.

Today marks day 3 on my roadtrippin’ excursion away from home.

First of all, a confession: I am totally the kind of person that will sneak up on people for a good photo. In this case, a wedding party. I was wandering around the Capitol Building in Sacramento and came across a bride, a groom and a beautiful red convertible. I ran over with excitement. I kept a respectable distance. I snapped a few photos and got a great “behind the scenes” shot of their photo shoot. I love the photographer laying on the ground in the foreground of the photo. It reminds me of the lengths my friends and I go for a good photo :)

While not snapping photos in Sacramento, I went shopping. I was on the hunt for boots (after borrowing Judy’s for an extended amount of time, she suggested I find some of my own). I planned on spending up to $100, but ending up scoring some vintage black leather boots for $20 at an awesome 80′s-lovin’ vintage store. They “fit me like a glove,” one girl said. The chick that helped me at the counter looked like she could have been in a David Bowie video. Loved her bright pink hair and sometimes wish I had the balls to dye my golden locks a similar shade.

Had some great conversations with new people, including a clerk at a boutique who is from Arcata and trying to make it back. I love how Arcatans can find each other anywhere in the world in less than ten minutes. Is must be something in the water?

Anyway, Karen and I have been staying at her studio apartment in Midtown. It’s great. John and his friends Luiz and Inga (from Germany – so badass!) met up with us yesterday afternoon to wander on foot around Sac. I swear, we walked at least sixty blocks. Whew. Joe Shreve (aka Shrevasaur) drove over from Santa Cruz for a Humboldt reunion and we mingled around the city for a few cocktails and an evening snack before venturing back to have a little slumber party action in Karen’s studio.

It was so cute seeing everyone’s sleeping bags all lined up in a row. I resisted the urge to take a photo. I’ve found people don’t usually like getting the paparazzi treatment at 3 a.m. unless they are in a ballgown singing karaoke or climbing a tree barefoot or something equally as exciting.

Most of the crew left Sacramento today. Karen and I have been watching an old Fox show called Arrested Development like mad women (it’s so funny – definitely recommend if you like dysfunctional family comedies) and are taking a break to do some writing and watch funny videos on Youtube.

Tomorrow, we are traveling to meet up with John in Berkeley at his new studio he scored last week. We’re going to head into San Francisco to do some more exploring and hopefully meet up with Luiz and Inga before we head back home on Tuesday.

There is a time and place for palm trees.  I imagine them on a tropical island, breezing in the wind in front of a sunset, while I lay on the white sand (and perhaps drinking a mojito). In my opinion, Los Angeles doesn’t seem to be the right place. Target to Home Depot to Albertson’s to Trader Joes. It’s just one affordable shopping center after another. (Don’t even get me started on IKEA – what is up with that crazy place?!)

I recently went to LA for five days and returned home a couple weeks ago. I was visiting my dad at his new house. It was nice to see him, but it was strange to see this new lifestyle he lead. He grew up in a family of six and lived in the same small town for most of his life up until three years ago. It was surprising to me to see how easily he managed to blend in with this fast-paced and ever-changing culture. It took an hour to drive anywhere amongst the palm tree speckled boulevards. I was a little frustrated, but I imagine if I found the right podcast, I would be just fine.

It seemed like it would be really hard to be a “somebody” in LA. Where is the support? The creativity? The compassion? As someone who grew up in a small hippie town, I can see adjusting to city life would be difficult for me at first. I still want to do it, I have this fire in me for an adventure and I think pursuing a career in the city would be a welcome challenge – just not in LA. Maybe Portland? I definitely need to do some more traveling to figure that out. Part of it is figuring out what you don’t want to do and it will get you on your way.

It’s like the palm trees just remind me of a plastic lifestyle, now. People are always trying to get ahead and seem so unhappy. They look to the palm trees for relaxation and comfort when I just see prickly, dry posts sticking up into the skyline.

I came home eager to see the Northern Coast of California, with bright blue skies and a full palette of greenery awaiting me. I took a deep breathe and exhaled. There is something about this place, in its slow pace. People take an extra minute to listen to each other. In a  life where most people are still struggling to find themselves, why chose to live somewhere that adds another element of hurt and confusion?

I experienced what it’s like to be Redding royalty, or what I imagine was about as close as you could get.

The setting?

Redding Convention Center, more like a basketball gym without the baskets.

The characters?

Lots of women with permed mullets.

Lots of Mexican couples.

This is where I come in:

Look down to the second row, front and center and you’ll see me eagerly awaiting a George Lopez concert. He’s a Mexican-American comedian of more than 30 years. His career stemmed from growing up poor and working comedy clubs, taking off now to cross-country tours, a sitcom and a syndicated stand-up TV show.

This wouldn’t be something I would normally pursue on my own. A comedy show? I had never really listened to George much and had only been to see Patton Oswalt’s standup routine once in San Francisco a few years back.

I went in with little expectations and didn’t feel let down. I had a great time with constant belly laughs and was gasping for air. It’s something I hope to do more often.

The one responsible for my Redding royalty hookup? Clyde.

His dad (also named Clyde!) owns a security company that monitors all of George’s concerts. Clyde has been working for George for four years. He invited Sara, Briana (the birthday girl!), Dave and I to complimentary seats for George’s first ever show in Redding.

It was nice to see Clyde all dressed up in a suit, tie and an ear piece. He looked so professional and important.

(Apparently the ensemble has gotten him mistaken for the Secret Service in the past! Haha.) Part of his job was to make sure people weren’t taking photos or video of the show. So sadly, my paparazzi habit was stifled for the night.

The opening act as a guy called Bryan Kellen. He was hilarious. Maybe even funnier than George. I would love to see him again. George was funny, but he seemed kind of bored with the audience. The last 20 minutes of the show seemed to drag on in a sloppy way.

I got a pink tank that says, “La Mas Chingona.” It roughly translates to “the toughest female” or “the top dog.” I think I can rock it despite being a white girl who speaks a very primitive version of Spanish.

Our night of VIP treatment ended at the Red Lion Hotel in Redding. The dance club was fantastic. A couple in chacos and khaki shorts were shaking it to Beyonce. An older red headed woman in a blue wrap dress owned the dance floor. Some of us were summoned when a woman sang a cover of Lady Gaga. We line danced to Lady GG. It was fantastic. Well done night and excellent adventure.

I was able so squeeze in some family time with my sister’s clan, too. Lost to an epic game of Sorry and won an even more epic game of Memory Match.

The only downer? I got my first speeding ticket ever on the way home. Got a little carried away on the curvy road listening to Spice Girls with Sara. The cop was super nice despite it all, probably the best run-in I have ever had in the whole three times I have ever been pulled over. Yeah, it sucks he gave me a ticket, but he was very fair in letting me off on a lesser speeding charge. I was shaking a bit. He said, “I’m not going to hurt you!” We laughed. Only Sara would say “Thank you so much. Have a nice day!” after the cop handed me the ticket.

We giggled about that all the way home.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time making this playlist. Then uploading it. Sounds easy enough, but not the case. Outside Lands is a music festival happening at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco next month. I’ve been to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass there before, but this will be my first Outside Lands. I compiled a short playlist of the bands I’m going to see and new ones I’m trying out. Hence, “sampler.” I hope this will convince even just one person to go. Or at least you will have a more “hip” addition to your iTunes. I’m pretty sure this link is only good for like a week so DOWNLOAD now. Click “regular download” and then scroll down to the bottom of the following page to find the download link. Pretty easy. I’ve got some Beats Antique, The Temper Trap, The Devil Makes Three, Pretty Lights and more! Don’t forget my man, Al Green <3

“Fader” The Temper Trap

“Walking On A Dream” Empire of the Sun

“Rome” Phoenix

“Roustabout (Bassnectar Remix)” Beats Antique
“Velvet Snow” Kings Of Leon
“All Hail” The Devil Makes Three
“When My Time Comes” Dawes
“Here I Am (Come and Take Me”  Al Green
“I Can See It In Your Face” Pretty Lights

Um, 99 degrees? Full face makeup? No thanks.

That’s the only reason why I didn’t become a zombie last weekend. (I also avoided being bitten, a top rule of surviving zombie attacks)

Hundreds of people mobbed the streets of Midtown Sacramento on July 10 dressed like zombies. Bride zombies, soldier zombies and even Beetlejuice! It was the Second Saturday of the month, an art walk/fair kind of thing. The zombies paraded in full force in honor of a film festival happening that night. I was just in town for the weekend, visiting my friend, Karen. We were totally going to dress up, too, until we realized how HOT it was. It worked out though. We danced with them as they passed by and took some great photos and video. Check it!
